Harry Maguire gifts Athletic Bilbao goal with horror pass as fans boo Man Utd defender

Harry Maguire has left Manchester United fans up in arms after a catastrophic error led to Athletic Bilbao’s opening goal.

The 30-year-old centre-back was denied the captain’s armband by Erik ten Hag in United’s final pre-season friendly, with second-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton preferred.

And it has been a horror first half for Maguire, who inexplicably attempted an outside of the boot pass to a teammate deep in his own half, before it was picked off by Inigo Lekue, who found Oihan Sancet.

Sancet played an incisive through ball to Nico Williams who was able to poke the ball past the onrushing Heaton and gove the Spanish side the lead in Dublin. You can watch the footage below.

Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst, who is present at the Aviva Stadium, confirmed on Twitter that the United fans were booing Maguire after the mistake.

Meanwhile, academy product Dan Gore, 12 years Maguire’s senior, is said to have been giving the England international a piece of his mind after he failed to move for a pass.

It is not the first time the former United skipper has come under criticism from his teammates, with new signing Andre Onana berating him for a mistake during their 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote: “Maguire is dreadful. The fridge can’t put in one half decent performance in a friendly.”

Supporters were quick to pour scorn on Maguire, with fans fuming at the defender for his mistake.

Exclusive: Rio Ferdinand wants “to speak” with Harry Maguire about his Man Utd future

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand wants to speak with Harry Maguire amid uncertainty over his Old Trafford future.

Maguire has endured a tumultuous 12 months. The England international was stripped of the United captaincy by Erik ten Hag last month, following a campaign in which he made just eight Premier League starts.

The 30-year-old has fallen behind Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw in the pecking order at Old Trafford, while his game-time could be limited even further should Jonny Evans re-sign for United.

It has been widely reported that United want some £50million for Maguire, having paid £80million for his services four years ago. Indeed, Maguire still has two years remaining on his contract, which sees him earn an alleged £200,000 a week.

But the player appears to be in limbo. West Ham have already seen two offers for Maguire rebuffed, with the Hammers having wanted to initially take him on a season-long loan, before having a £20million bid turned down.

It is believed David Moyes may look elsewhere, given concerns over Maguire’s salary.

Rio Ferdinand on Harry Maguire

With Maguire’s future shrouded in uncertainty, United legend Ferdinand admitted he would like to speak to the player.

Speaking exclusively to SPORTbible, TNT Sports pundit Ferdinand said: “It all depends on Harry Maguire and what he wants.

“But also if he makes a decision to leave I totally get it. I think it’s interesting. I think it’s all down to him, what his desires are at this moment in time. We don’t have that information.”
