Mason Greenwood is facing calls to be dropped from his new Spain squad – just 24 hours after signing.
The disgraced star, 21, was loaned out to Getafe after Manchester United decided he would no longer play for them following an investigation into an alleged attempted rape. Spain’s leading domestic violence charity called on Saturday night for him to be sent back to the UK before he even kicked a ball in La Liga.
Ana Bella Estévez of the Ana Bella Foundation said of Madrid-based Getafe: “The club are showing a terrible example.
England striker Greenwood was sacked by United in January 2022. This comes after a disturbing audio recording of a man believed to be from Greenwood leaked online. He was charged with attempted rape, control and coercion and assault, but the CPS dropped the case in February. He never returned to the pitch with United and a proposed return drew widespread backlash from fans, including TV presenter Rachel Riley.
Ms Estevez told us: “The leaders of Getafe should never have hired Mason Greenwood and should reverse their decision immediately.
“When you are a leading organization like Getafe, there is no excuse for taking a neutral stance on violence against women: you have to take moral responsibility.”
His appeal comes days after Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales was suspended for kissing Spanish star Jenni Hermoso on the lips during World Cup celebrations in the country.
In a statement confirming Greenwood’s move to the Spanish side, United simply said: “Mason Greenwood has signed a one-season loan deal for La Liga club Getafe, pending international approval.” This move will allow Greenwood to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.”
United officials also pledged to stay in contact with the England international, adding: “The club will continue to provide support to Mason and his family during this transitional period.”

The 21-year-old had played 129 games for United and scored 35 goals before being arrested in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, assault, control and coercion. He was subsequently suspended by the Red Devils. Those charges were later dropped.
Greenwood currently has a presence to his name having made his England debut under Gareth Southgate in September 2020.
The Three Lions coach was asked about Greenwood’s future during his latest selection announcement and confirmed that the forward was not being considered for the time being. Speaking at the press conference, he said: “Obviously it is a very complex issue. He’s not playing, so that’s not a consideration for us. It’s hypothetical. Whatever I say, frankly it will be used in a less nuanced way”.
