West Ham star urges Scott McTominay to make Manchester United transfer decision

West Ham striker Michael Antonio has suggested that Scott McTominay should leave Manchester United if he continues to get minimal chances under Erik ten Hag.

The Scottish midfielder attracted major interest from The Hammers in the summer but their eventual £30 million bid was snuffed by United, who were looking for closer to £40 million for the academy graduate.

McTominay struggled for regular game-time last season after Ten Hag brought in the midfield duo of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, and that problem has only gotten worse for the 26-year-old this term after additional signings of Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount, and the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo and Hannibal Mejbri.

However, it was the Scotsman who saved the day for United last time out as they beat Brentford 2-1 with two stoppage-time goals from McTominay, who came on in the dying minutes of the game.

Antonio, who scored 14 times last season, has suggested that McTominay’s best call of action is to leave Old Trafford due to the clear preference Ten Hag has for his midfield.

“Obviously you see the qualities that he has and everything that he brings to the team,” Antonio told The Footballer’s Football Podcast. “A few games last year, you could see how well he is and the position that he plays. Obviously, we wanted to take him in the summer.

“He definitely has the qualities to play in the Premier League, it’s just every manager has their philosophy and the way they want to play. It’s one of those things that in football, managers just feel you are the one for them or not. Sometimes you outlive a manager, sometimes you don’t.

“It’s just whether he’s willing to stay around to see what happens – whether he’s going to get some more actual minutes and keep pushing himself – or this season might be the season where he doesn’t see himself outliving him [Ten Hag] and moving on somewhere else to show what he can do. Coming off the bench and giving them their win like that, that’s the best way to show the qualities that you have and what you bring to the team.”

Various reports have suggested that a move in January is possible for McTominay, who has started just two games so far this term, and West Ham are believed to be one of the options, according to the Manchester Evening News.
