Copenhagen manager Jacob Neestrup has said that Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho should have been sent off following an incident before the penalty.
The Red Devils registered a third-straight victory on Tuesday night following a 1-0 triumph over Copenhagen. However, the game was far from straightforward.
The Danish champions went toe-to-toe with United over 90 minutes. A Harry Maguire headed goal proved the winner, but things could have been quite different.
Right at the end, Scott McTominay conceded a needless penalty but Andre Onana spared his blushes with a fantastic save to ensure that United took three points from the Champions League clash.
Shortly after the game, a video of Garnacho scuffing the penalty spot was shared on social media. Neestrup was not impressed and said that players should be sent off for such incidents.
He told Danish outlet VG: “It is up to referees and associations to set limits, all you have to do is give a red card for something like that, then people stop doing it.”
Garnacho’s incident did not warrant a red card
Neestrup was obviously furious after Copenhagen’s late defeat at Old Trafford. The club had a brilliant chance from the penalty spot but Onana denied them in stoppage time.
The incident would not have been even discussed, had Copenhagen picked up a point. Meanwhile, Garnacho was unlikely to be sent off even if the referee spotted what he did.
Last year, Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes did something similar against Manchester City in the Premier League. The Brazilian only received a yellow card for the offence.
Yesterday’s win over Copenhagen has opened United’s account for the Champions League campaign. They are now on three points midway through the group stage.
The club still have plenty of work to do. They need to beat Copenhagen and Galatasaray (both away) in the next two outings to boost their chances of making the last 16.
