Martin Truex Jr. weighs in on Austin Dillon’s NASCAR penalty: ‘I’m happy they did something’
The wrecks at the end of the Cook Out 400 have been scrutinized six ways to Sunday at this point, with viewpoints and opinions differing across the board on Austin Dillon‘s clear-out of Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin.
For his part, Logano felt the contact he suffered at Dillon’s hands — a hard shove to the rear that sent him into the outside wall — was different than a similar contentious finish between himself and Martin Truex Jr. back in 2018.
Then, Logano got into Truex to take the win at Martinsville. Truex disagreed with Logano’s take that the Martinsville finish and the Richmond finish were materially different.
“I mean I think maybe the outcome was a little different with that, but the intent was the same, right?” Truex Jr. said Saturday at Michigan. “It was I’m going to drive into the corner as hard as I can and hit the guy and hope I can get by him. I don’t really agree with what (Logano) said. But I don’t know.”
Having been the victim of such a push from Logano, Truex can likely relate to the position both Logano and Hamlin are in this week. Both seemed on their way to a win before super aggressive driving by Austin Dillon derailed them.
For his part, Truex is glad NASCAR took action against Austin Dillon, docking him 25 points and stripping his playoff berth for racing detrimental to the sport.
“Big picture I think I’m happy they did something, because I just don’t agree with that kind of racing,” Truex Jr. said. “I understand the format and everybody just blames that. You still have to drive the car and anyone can drive through the guy in front of them. Anyone can do it. Takes no skill, not talent at all. So I’m glad they did something so guys will be a little more hesitant to do that.
“But yeah, I mean we’ve seen these things happen before over the years, so it is what it is.”
Truex Jr. was further asked if he agreed that the Austin Dillon contact on Hamlin was intentional. He demurred.
“I’ll be honest with you, I haven’t even looked at it close enough because at the end of the day it doesn’t really affect me and my thoughts on the situation don’t really affect anyone or really even matter for that sake,” he said. “I didn’t really study it like a lot of people did.”
