Chelsea manager post-match interview and ratings

A wide-open and entertaining game, with Chelsea improving as things went along and giving some real promise for the season ahead.

We started a bit nervously, understandably, and Liverpool created multiple dangerous opportunities, especially from turnovers and poor touches. Salah rattled the crossbar on twelve minutes then, inevitably, set up Luis Díaz for the game’s opening goal six minutes later.

The goal seemed to settle us down, strangely enough, but just as we started showing some signs of life, Salah popped up again. Thankfully, this time he was ruled a hair offside.

We took that as a sign from the gods and turned up the quality and cohesion, putting together some excellent moves and finding the equalizer from a second ball on a corner. And we almost scored immediately after, but Chilwell, like Salah earlier, was a step offside. Jackson then missed a great chance as we finished the half on the front foot.

After the half-time breather, things took a few minutes to get revved up again. But a couple Chelsea turnovers gifted Liverpool a couple good looks, then Nicolas Jackson almost got called for an inadvertent handball in the area; thankfully VAR took a lenient view.

Chelsea then cranked up pressure of our own, and Chilwell wasted a glorious opportunity with a poor first touch. A few half-chances followed before the teams started making changes and the flow of the game got a bit more convoluted and scrappy as we headed into the final half hour.

The game never stopped being entertaining, but no clear cut chances followed. Mudryk almost got one at the end, but ended up too wide after rounding the goalkeeper from Jackson’s wonderful run.

And so, it’s another draw between Chelsea and Liverpool.

A decent start to the season.

Carefree.

  • A surprising back-three look from Pochettino (3-5-2), with Colwill-Silva-Disasi across the back. Gallagher the deepest midfielder, with Enzo and Chukwuemeka pushing up. Reecey and Chilly at wingback, Sterling wide right, Jackson front and center but also dropping deep.
  • Four debuts in the starting lineup (Colwill, Disasi, Jackson, Sánchez). Debut goal for Disasi. Another debut off the bench for Gusto, then also late on for Ugochukwu.
  • Hopefully nothing serious for James on the apparent knock. Chilwell with the armband afterwards. Then Silva at the end.
  • Seventh (7th!) straight draw between these two teams.
  • This extended added-on time lark is ridiculous. Can just switch to a proper stopped-clock timekeeping already?!
  • Next up: West Ham, away, next weekend
  • KTBFFH

pochettino’s Chelsea fight back to draw 1-1 with Liverpool

Did Chelsea’s or Liverpool’s midfield need Caicedo more?

Steve Nicol explains who would benefit most from signing Moises Caicedo after Chelsea and Liverpool draw 1-1.

Chelsea came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday in a Premier League opener that showed the Blues have already made progress under new manager Mauricio Pochettino.

In the marquee matchup of the Premier League’s opening round, Luis Diaz put Liverpool ahead after a lightning counter-attack in the 18th minute and defender Axel Disasi marked his Chelsea debut by scoring the equalizer from close range in the 37th.

Both teams also had goals disallowed by VAR checks in an open and chance-filled first half that highlighted just why the two rivals are trying to spend more than £110 million ($140 million) on bringing in defensive midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton.

Caicedo has reportedly chosen to join Chelsea over Liverpool, which could prove a more important result than the draw as it was evident that both sides badly need a ball-winning midfielder of the Ecuadorian’s caliber.

Chelsea already looked a different team under Pochettino, though, playing with a level of intensity rarely seen at Stamford Bridge last season, when the club went through three managers.

The hosts dominated possession and pegged Liverpool back for large parts of the game, although new striker Nicolas Jackson struggled to get involved.

His best chance came in the 71st when he burst through on goal but had his shot saved by Alisson Becker.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s new-look midfield with summer signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai struggled to control the game, showing that Jurgen Klopp’s team might miss the experience of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, both of whom moved to the Saudi Pro League this summer.

Chelsea always looked vulnerable to counter-attacks, though, and Mohamed Salah had already hit the crossbar by the time Liverpool took the lead.

Salah burst forward and squared the ball for Diaz to slide in and sidefoot home past new Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The Egypt international thought he had doubled the lead with a clinical finish in the 29th, but replays showed he was just offside when making his run into the area.

Instead, Chelsea drew level through an unlikely source. After Liverpool had cleared the ball twice following a corner, it was headed straight back into the area by Ben Chilwell, where Disasi was left alone to poke the ball past Alisson.

Chelsea then thought they had taken the lead just minutes later, but this time it was Chilwell who was narrowly offside when he was played through on goal.

Liverpool substitute Darwin Nunez came the closest to a late winner, when his long-range strike in injury time was deflected narrowly wide for a corner.

That corner only led to a dangerous-looking counter for Chelsea, but substitute Mykhailo Mudryk couldn’t control the ball after rounding Alisson.

Liverpool player ratings as Mohamed Salah good before angry reaction at Chelsea

Player ratings from Ian Doyle after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw away to Chelsea in the Premier League

Alisson Becker 8

A few decent takes and no chance with Chelsea equaliser. Good saves from Chilwell and Jackson second half.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 7

Stepped into central midfield regularly, used ball well and switched on defensively. Decent outing. Booked.

Ibrahima Konate 7

Clever footwork in front of away fans drew loud cheers and good block to deny Fernandez. Best of Liverpool defenders.

Virgil van Dijk 7

Used positioning to ensure he wasn’t exposed by pace of Jackson before break. Unashamedly no-nonsense with some of his clearances, and aerially dominant.

Andy Robertson 6

Few opportunities to press forward first half as hands full dealing with Sterling, but more lively going forward immediately after break.

Alexis Mac Allister 6

Looked a little nervous at times first half in the defensive midfield role and lost ball too often but sent Salah away to create the opener. Booked.

Dominik Szoboszlai 7

Impressed with one thrusting run into the area early on and not afraid to harass Chelsea players. Second half a bit more of a slog, however.

Cody Gakpo 6

Tough going on the left of the midfield three with much of his work defensive. Subbed.

Mohamed Salah 8

Struck the bar from edge of area, brilliant cross set up Diaz opener, had goalbound shot blocked and goal disallowed inside opening half-hour. Needed more service after break, though, and less than impressed at being subbed.

Diogo Jota 6

Sent two early efforts off target but otherwise quiet first half until painfully running into Colwill. Not much change after break. Subbed.

Luis Diaz 6

Very quick to get on the end of Salah cross for the opener. Not as involved as would have liked overall, though. Subbed.

Curtis Jones (for Gakpo 66) 6

Sought to bring a bit more composure to midfield.

Darwin Nunez (for Jota 66) 6

Only limited openings for chaos with Chelsea on the offensive.

Ben Doak (for Salah 77) 6

More minutes for the exciting teenager.

Harvey Elliott (for Diaz 77) 7

Added energy to the late engine room effort. Good cameo.
