Chelsea lacking cohesion amidst player debuts

86′ Chelsea 0-2 Manchester City

All four of Maresca’s second-half substitutions have introduced summer signings, and cohesion has become more of an issue for Chelsea as the game has worn on.

Kovacic was allowed far too much room to advance through the middle of the pitch for City’s second goal there, while Sanchez should probably have kept out the Croatian’s well struck but savable shot.

84′ Chelsea 0-2 Manchester City

Kovacic doubles City’s lead, giving them crucial breathing room in the final minutes here!

He collects the ball in midfield and glides past two defenders before curling a shot from the edge of the box towards the near post. Sanchez gets a hand to the ball but can only push it onto the post and in.

Kovacic makes sure not to celebrate against his former club.

Handball penalty would have been harsh on Kovacic

81′ Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Going back to Chelsea’s handball appeal from a few minutes ago, referees are not giving penalties for incidents like that, where the defending player is so close to the one who played the ball. That’s not a new thing but it was reinforced on a PGMOL call in midweek. Although don’t come looking for me when one is inevitably given at some point this season.

Veiga makes Chelsea debut

A fourth Chelsea sub and a fourth Chelsea debutant, as Renato Veiga replaces Marc Cucurella who appeared to be struggling with a knock.

Chelsea are now out of sub opportunities.

77′ Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Gusto gets into space on the right side of City’s box but his cross is blocked. Moments later, a Chelsea player fires the ball into Kovacic’s arm from close range, prompting at least the team’s third penalty appeal of the day, but once again Anthony Taylor isn’t having it.

Given the updated handball rules this season, intended to limit the circumstances in which penalties are awarded, the no-call there looks to be correct.

City break forward as Doku attempts to slip Haaland in on goal, but Chelsea’s defence just manages to cut the pass out.

Chelsea are hanging around in this game…

De Bruyne misses target

73′ Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

De Bruyne sees daylight and fires a curling shot goalwards, but just misses wide of the target.

Plenty of early-season rust on display today, all around.

Another surprising Ederson mistake

71′ Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Ederson makes an uncharacteristic mistake for the second time today, this time failing to catch a cross that hits him straight in the hands.

Once again though, he escapes unpunished, Doku doing well to shepherd the ball away from danger.

While the sparring continues on the pitch, can I just say that neither of these kits are particularly appealing.

The navy line across the back of the white Manchester City shorts makes me think it’s some of sponsor’s advert, while the Chelsea home shirt looks like a training top.

Anyway, back to the football…

Lewis goal for City disallowed

65′ Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Lewis thought he had doubled City’s lead but his goal has been ruled for a foul on Haaland, who has been booked to add insult to injury.

Haaland chested the ball down in the six-yard area, but Colwill did very well to block his shot. Haaland then caught Colwill for the foul before Lewis fired the loose ball through traffic into the back of the net.

Ederson denies Jackson!

61′ Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Ederson denies Jackson from point-blank range! Gusto popped the ball into the six-yard area and Jackson pushed it towards goal with an awkward volley, but the goalkeeper stood tall to make the save.

61′ Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Huge chance for City to hit Chelsea on the break but after Doku does brilliantly to carry the ball a good 60 yards, he just plays a blind pass into the box that is nowhere near a team-mate.

Immediate chance for Neto

60′ Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Neto nearly scores with his first touch but Lewis just manages to beat him to Fernandez’s pass across the face of goal.

50′ Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Savinho’s knee injury brings Foden into the action a little sooner than expected. Guardiola always says that Foden is ready to go after an injury or a break from football so there shouldn’t be a huge amount of rustiness, but it is clear that the whole team is a little out of kilter still so we’ll see how Foden fares.

Foden replaces Savinho

46′ Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

City have made the first sub of the match, replacing Premier League debutant Savinho with Phil Foden at half-time. Savinho received treatment from City’s trainers in the final minutes of the first half.

Savinho is now sitting on City’s bench with ice on his knee.
