Liverpool are looking for a sporting director to replace outgoing Julian Ward

Jurgen Klopp has revealed his role in Liverpool’s search for a new sporting director ahead of Julian Ward’s departure from the club.

Ward replaced Michael Edwards in the role last summer, but confirmed last year that he would leave the position after just one season. Although he remains responsible for most of the Reds’ upcoming transfer activity, he will leave the club this summer.

Several sporting directors have been linked to the vacant Anfield post, with Monaco’s Paul Mitchell, former Arsenal boss Sven Mislintat and most recently Bayer Leverkusen’s Tim Steidten all emerging names. OPINIONThe Liverpool duo have just revealed the match about Jurgen Klopp’s midfielder makeover

Old Liverpool were back on Monday night as we convincingly beat Leeds United. We have seen this level of performance at times this season: wins against Rangers 7-1, Bournemouth 9-0 and Manchester United 7-0. These games are what we are all about, but we love Bournemouth and Wolves have gone and become a shadow of ourselves. The inconsistency visible to all was ridiculous.

We didn’t really do much in the first 30 minutes against Leeds. We clung to the ball but were barely threatened and it looked like it would be one of those nights again. Once Liverpool scored the opener, we kicked it into gear and the confidence quickly started to flow. Mohamed Salah’s second goal was something special, it was an amazing move that only the best teams in the world can score.

It was another superb performance from Trent Alexander-Arnold on Monday, who followed up his assist in the draw with Arsenal by scoring twice at Elland Road. We have problems in midfield and can Trent play there? Absolute. We’ve seen how much damage he can do in this position in recent games. Maybe the manager is watching what’s going on with Jude Bellingham and thinking about workarounds. If Trent loses a tackle in midfield, he won’t catch it as often as the same thing happens to right-back.

What we have learned is that Alexander-Arnold can play the opposite full-back ridiculously well and is back in style after a rough few months for him. He has so much to offer and I’m glad he seems to be back in top form. Great players may have drops, but they always come back.

Another player who caught my eye against Leeds was Curtis Jones, who started for the third consecutive game and was let go by the manager. Jurgen is looking at what can work ahead of next season – maybe he and Trent are thinking about midfield. Before continuing, Jones was probably our best player on the pitch at Leeds.

Top 4 unlikely but not impossible

Monday’s win left us nine points behind in the Champions League places with eight games to go. It’s out of our control and we have to win all the remaining matches, but it’s not entirely out of the question. If we keep playing like we did in Leeds for our finals, who knows where we’ll end up. We need to get the three points against Nottingham Forest and then see how it goes, we could easily sneak into the top four.

If you were a bettor, you wouldn’t be betting money on our presence in the Champions League. The pressure is on Newcastle and Tottenham which could work in our favor
