One year after all those comebacks led Real Madrid to Champions League glory, they somehow found a way to top it tonight! What a wild game.

Defiant to the last

90+3′ Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid

This may be a brutal result for the home supporters, but they’re showing their support with a rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Injury time

90+1′ Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid

Three minutes are added on here. The travelling supporters are ole-ing Real’s passing now.

Warm reception for Modric

89′ Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid

Plenty of Liverpool fans around me applauding Luka Modric as he goes off. He was sensational tonight, 37 years old but still so effective.

Double change for Real

87′ Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid

Asensio replaces Benzema and Kroos replaces Modric.

Liverpool make final sub

85′ Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid

Bajcetic is replaced by Elliott.

Liverpool’s shocking collapse

88′ Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid

That lightning-quick start and the joy around this place when Courtois’ blunder enabled Salah to make it 2-0 feels like a distant memory. It’s all gone so flat.

Liverpool look shell-shocked. Real have been outstanding but it’s been far too easy for them to get at Klopp’s team.

Benzema overtakes Vinicius

83′ Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid

Benzema’s double means he now has six goals against Liverpool in his career, so Vinicius Jr’s reign as the record top-scorer against the club in European Cup and Champions League history lasted less than an hour.

Ceballos joins the fray

81′ Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid

Ancelotti makes his second sub of the match, bringing on Ceballos for Rodrygo.

Double change for Liverpool

73′ Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid

Gomez replaces Matip and Milner replaces Henderson.

Modric created that goal

72′ Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid

Benzema’s calm and technique there was fantastic. Vinicius’ intelligence and unselfishness for the assist was also so impressive.

But Modric winning the ball back in own half, then bursting past Fabinho, and then bursting past teenager Bajcetic (who at 18 is less than half Modric’s 37 years), was the most amazing thing about a pretty amazing fifth goal for Madrid tonight.

GOAL! Real are running away with this!

67′ Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid

Real have scored five at Anfield!

Modric pinches the ball off Fabinho and sets away on the counter-attack. The ball comes to Benzema, who coolly takes it around an onrushing Alisson and fires it home.

The home supporters are absolutely stunned.

Double change for Liverpool

64′ Liverpool 2-4 Real Madrid

Jurgen Klopp makes his first changes of the match, bringing on Firmino for Gakpo and Jota for Nunez.

Vinicius Jr booked

60′ Liverpool 2-4 Real Madrid

Vinicius Jr receives the first yellow card of this match for a bit of time-wasting.

Vinicius Jr booked

60′ Liverpool 2-4 Real Madrid

Vinicius Jr receives the first yellow card of this match for a bit of time-wasting.

GOAL! Real double their lead!

55′ Liverpool 2-4 Real Madrid

Four straight goals for Real!

Benzema plays a great one-two with Rodrygo before firing a shot that takes a big deflection off Gomez and finds the back of the net.

Things have gone from bad to worse for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Real getting their comebacks done early this year

53′ Liverpool 2-3 Real Madrid

Last season, Real Madrid usually waited for the second leg, or the second half of the second leg, or even into extra time, to complete their Champions League comebacks.

Packing it all into just 48 minutes tonight!

GOAL! Madrid take the lead!

47′ Liverpool 2-3 Real Madrid

Real have come from two goals down to lead!

After Vinicius Jr wins a free kick near the byline Modric whips it in towards the near post, where an unmarked Militao slams it home with his head.

What a turnaround!

Second half is underway!

46′ Liverpool 2-2 Real Madrid

We’ve resumed action at Anfield! After a wild opening 45 minutes, what does the second half have in store for us?

HT: Liverpool 2-2 Real Madrid

What a half! Goals aplenty, goalkeeping howlers, we’ve seen it all!

Catch your breath and get ready for the second 45!

Crucial intervention by Robertson

45′ Liverpool 2-2 Real Madrid

Real break down the field at lightning-quick pace after a Liverpool free kick is saved by Courtois.

Vinicius crosses for Rodrygo who nearly has a tap-in at the far post, but Robertson does really well to get back in time to intercept the pass.

Vinicius flourishes against Liverpool

42′ Liverpool 2-2 Real Madrid

Vinicius Junior has now scored five goals in four career games against Liverpool.
At 22 years and 224 days, he is also the second youngest player to score in three consecutive Champions League games for Real Madrid, after Raul Gonzalez in December 1999 (22 years and 163 days).

OBJECTIVE! Real equalizer!

36′ Liverpool 2-2 Real Madrid

Two of the best goalkeepers in the world in this match and two incredible mistakes. This time it’s Alisson’s turn to give away a goal as he shoots the ball directly at Vinicius Jr only to see it come back into his goal.

Vinicius enjoys road trips in Britain

34′ Liverpool 2-1 Real Madrid

Vinicio Jr. has now been directly involved in eight goals in his last nine Champions League away games (six goals and two assists), four of them away against British sides. Alisson denies Vinicius

31′ Liverpool 2-1 Real Madrid

Real get a corner kick and the ball lands on Vinicius near where he had scored before. He pushes his way through traffic, but this time Alisson does a great job of taking a nosedive.

I work hard for Nacho

29′ Liverpool 2-1 Real Madrid

Alaba is down with a right hamstring problem and Real Madrid have to make a substitution at left-back. The Austrian had just returned from a similar injury and the left-back has been a real problem for Real Madrid lately.

Alaba out injured

27′ Liverpool 2-1 Real Madrid

Nacho replaces Alaba, who cannot continue due to an injury. Opportunity for Liverpool

25′ Liverpool 2-1 Real Madrid

Salah puts the ball in Real’s box but sees his shot blocked by Militao. Nunez is there to try and force the ball over the goal line but Carvajal makes an excellent final tackle to deny a goal.

Breathless action

24′ Liverpool 2-1 Real Madrid

What a superb opening 20 minutes. Liverpool have been everything Klopp has asked for so far – such good pace and intensity for their game and a lag from Real, inspired by a spooky atmosphere here.
However, that superb strike from Vinicius Jr. to halve the deficit dampened the mood a bit. Could Joe Gomez have done better? It just seemed to postpone closing.

OBJECTIVE! Really get one!

21′ Liverpool 2-1 Real Madrid

Vinicius Jr, the only goalscorer in last season’s final, has three defenders ahead of him in the corner of the Liverpool box but finds a way to thread the needle between them and fire a shot that beats Alisson to the far post . An incredible goal out of nowhere.

Salah is equivalent to Drogba

18′ Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid

Mohamed Salah has now scored 44 career Champions League goals, equaling Didier Drogba as the best African player in the history of the competition. AIM! Liverpool again!

14′ Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid

Courtois was Real’s MVP when they beat Liverpool in last season’s final, but he’s just handed them a goal here.

The keeper trails on the ball after receiving a back pass before losing control and Salah is there to pounce and score one of the easiest goals of his career.
What a start for the hosts

Luck for Salah

12′ Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid

Gakpo showed great strength to face a challenge from Camavinga in midfield before taking the ball to Salah.
Salah waits for Alexandre-Arnold to run to create space before firing at close range, but fails to hit the target.
Liverpool were everywhere at Real on his debut. The brilliant finish of Nunez

9′ Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid

What a start for Liverpool. Darwin Nunez with a glorious and really quite ridiculous back heel strike.

It is a declared objective on his part. I thought his best goal was at Newcastle on Saturday because he hit it so well, but that goal against Real Madrid just overshadowed it.

And Mohamed Salah’s pass was different. It is his 13th Champions League assist for Liverpool – the most for a player at the club.

AIM! Liverpool are ahead!

4′ Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid

The perfect start for Liverpool! Darwin Nunez with a beautifully cheeky finish, deflecting a cross from Salah!

And we left!

1′ Liverpool 0-0 Real Madrid

After a minute’s silence in honor of Real Madrid legend Amancio Amaro, who passed away this morning, Real Madrid get the ball rolling and we’re off to Anfield!
