Leeds United v Liverpool LIVE – Goals, goals from Jota, Salah, Gakpo and Sinisterra, commentary stream

Live score updates and commentary stream as Liverpool travel to Elland Road to face Leeds United in the Premier League

Liverpool begin the final leg of their Premier League season with a journey through the Pennines to Elland Road, where they meet relegation-threatened Leeds United.

Jurgen Klopp’s men head into the competition after last weekend’s draw against Premier League leaders Arsenal and will keep an optimistic eye on fourth and final Champions League spot after Newcastle defeat United at Villa Park on Saturday lunchtime.

Luis Diaz is set to be back in the matchday squad for the first time in more than six months after spending most of the season with a knee injury and setback he suffered in Dubai in December.

Ibrahima Konaté and Alisson Becker, who both missed training sessions at the AXA training center last week due to various issues, are set to face late fitness tests in hopes of being available for the game tonight.

tall and wide

Jota goes in search of his second goal of the evening, but his shot misses and sails into the stands. Double change

Rodrigo and Aaronson make way for Rutter and Summerville as Leeds have a double chance

OBJECTIVE! Leeds 1-6 Liverpool (Salah)

Brilliant half-time goal for Liverpool. Robertson’s overlap leads the Scotsman to spot Gakpo, who heads towards Salah to shoot home for his second of the night.

There for the taking

Liverpool have a chance to get a few more, I’m sure. Palace took five last time out and a fourth was just disallowed when Van Dijk was just flagged offside after a brilliant free kick which was completed by Salah.

Offside

The verdict of the VAR is in… and it’s off the beaten track.

VAR check

The target is now checked. Virgil van Dijk’s position at the far post is checked.

Door… out of the question

Salah converts from close range but VAR rules out the goal as offside. Wood processing

Aaronson’s shot from outside the box hit the crossbar.

Target drought over

Diogo Jota’s song echoes in Elland Road. It was the Portuguese international’s first goal for Liverpool in more than a year. He also caught it so well after a beautiful defensive pass from Curtis Jones. Liverpool now have to keep their heads together. OBJECTIVE! Leeds 1-3 Liverpool (Jota)

Liverpool restore two-goal lead! Jones’s through ball found Jota, who swept home with a first shot on the edge of the box.

Bad mistake

Another completely avoidable goal from Liverpool’s perspective as Konate was caught in possession. Luis Sinsterra finishes and Leeds have a lifeline. Even out of nowhere. Elland Road is now ready for it. AIM! Leeds 1-2 Liverpool (Sinister)

A big error from Konate results in Leeds withdrawing a goal. The French defender is disowned by Liverpool’s boxing Sinisterra, who rush towards goal before knocking the ball past Alisson.

Second part

The teams are back and the second half has started.

Summary HT

A very lackluster good end to the half for Liverpool, who were allowed to keep possession by a Leeds side who seemed happy to sit down and play on the counter attack.

It worked well until Alexander-Arnold got into a good position in midfield – helped by a rebound from his arm – and finally set up Gakpo for the opener. Salah’s second was well taken but Leeds definitely need to do more in the second half. This has not been very good for them and the Reds are now in a good position to play on the counterattack.

There is still a lot to play for, especially given Liverpool’s poor form this season, but this is a good position for Klopp’s side.

HT Player Ratings

Alisson Becker7

He worked up a free header from Rodrigo early on and was confident in handling.

Trent Alexander Arnold 7

Pushed into midfield whenever possible and made a fortune which ultimately helped him help the former. Ibrahima Konat 8

Dominant performance from the in-form and crucial Frenchman at times when Leeds were threatening before the break.

Virgil van Dijk6

Not his most laid-back first half, during which he was oddly nervous at times.

Andy Robertson6

Lots of commotion back and forth.

Fabian 6

I saw a lot of ball before the break, but I rushed for the ball too often. Reserve. Jordan Henderson6

Occasionally found himself on the right wing but the quality of the service was lacking. Good engine though.

Curtis Jones6

Kept it simple and worked hard to recover stray balls immediately but need to lean forward more.

Mohammad Salah 7

Great finish for second and still a threat against Firpo. Liverpool are once again the liveliest attack. Cody Gakpo6

Some encouraging moments before the break, especially when the ball was held at close range and the fly-half kicked in.

Diogo Jota5

It was good to pick up the ball in midfield and run forward to set up the second, but before that it had been really terrible.

HT: Leeds 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool leads by two goals at half-time. Goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah put Jurgen Klopp’s side in a strong position at Elland Road. Let’s see what the second half brings. Convenient location

You’d expect Liverpool to actually turn the screw here now, right? They’ve generally fared well if their tails were allowed to go up this season. Bournemouth, Manchester United, Rangers and Ajax come to mind, but we’ll see if they can do something similar here. Leeds have been awful and Liverpool are 2-0 up without really getting out of first gear.
