Man United has one cause for optimism after losing in the Champions League

Thomas Tuchel’s side were so comfortable in the contest that they seemed content with just keeping the ball in and around the halfway line to tire the Red Devils out.

United stays positive

It was a night that promised so much but in the end, United exited the competition with a whimper. Despite two losses to the Bavarian side, it was the games sandwiched in between these two encounters that cost the Red Devils.

Scoring three goals away from home twice has to mean six points but the Red Devils ended up with just one following a disastrous draw to Galatasaray and a calamitous loss to FC Copenhagen.

It’s the Danish side who advances through to the next round of the competition with United finishing rock bottom, this means that there will be no European football for the Red Devils after the turn of the year.

Usually, this scenario would be a disaster but perhaps avoiding the Europa League altogether could be a blessing in disguise for United, who are in such an inconsistent vein of form.

Another Ten Hag’s blessing in disguise

During the second half of last season, because of how well United were doing in all four competitions, Erik ten Hag’s side had a lot of games to contend with.

There would usually be three games a week for the Red Devils to have to play and they did so admirably, only suffering a handful of injuries along the way.

However, the other frustration for the Dutchman must have been that he couldn’t get across his tactical ideas simply because of the number of games, as well as those pesky injuries.

The games have kept on coming this season which has led to the 53-year-old becoming frustrated with the schedule.

“Every manager is complaining about the schedule,” Ten Hag said last month. “But still, they keep adding games to the schedule. Next year they add two games (in the new Champions League format) and the limits are… we already achieved the limits. I think we already crossed the limits of what players can handle.”

Not teaching his players his methods, is bound to frustrate him and this could be why the Red Devils have struggled recently. With a much clearer schedule for United, the hope will be these tactical ideas can be translated on the pitch.
