Manchester United are in ‘positive’ talks with sponsor Adidas over Mason Greenwood returning to the squad

Mason Greenwood could still have a future at Manchester United as Adidas, the club’s biggest sponsor, considers approving plans for his return to the team.

Greenwood has not played for United since January 2022 after being charged with rape, control and coercion and assault. The charges were dropped in February but the striker remained suspended by United, who launched their own investigation into his conduct.

Greenwood was recently pictured in private training sessions with manager Erik ten Hag, who reportedly spoke to the player on several occasions. The 21-year-old could be loaned out for next season to Italian clubs interested in signing him on a temporary basis.

But according to The Sun, United have discussed the possibility of his return with shirt sponsor Adidas, describing those talks as “positive”.

Insurance from the German sportswear giant, who signed a ten-year deal with United in 2015 worth £750m, could see other sponsors follow suit.

A source tells the newspaper: ‘The first signs from Adidas are positive. Without their blessing it would be hard to see a way back. However, they indicated that his return would not necessarily pose an insurmountable obstacle.

“They certainly gave the impression that they wouldn’t object vehemently.”

Greenwood’s return to the team would cause a huge backlash for United. While the striker is said to have the backing of some of his teammates, United women’s team are very concerned about such a possibility.

Nike terminated Greenwood’s endorsement deal after his arrest, while the player was also removed from the FIFA video game series.

The Sun report adds that United bosses could make a final decision on the player’s future in the coming weeks. He hasn’t played for Manchester United since January 22, 2022 when he started a 1-0 win over West Ham in the Premier League.

Last week, United Boss Ten Hag said he had “shared his opinion” with the club on the future of Greenwood. “It’s a club decision and of course I shared my opinion, but it’s a club decision and we must all accept it.”

Driven if he wanted Greenwood to return to the United Squad, ten hag added: “I can’t say it much, but I shared my opinion about it, so let’s see what will happen”.
