Unexpected negotiations ‘in progress’ between Chelsea and Milan over Lukaku

AC Milan are in talks with Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea over a possible shock move late in the window, it is claimed, but there are several hindrances to overcome.

Carlo Pellegatti was the first to report that the ‘crazy idea’ of Lukaku turning his back on the Nerazzurri and Bianconeri to move to Milan is something that could be achievable given the relations between Gerry Cardinale and Todd Boehly.

During his comments in today’s pre-Bologna press conference, Stefano Pioli made it clear that a new centre-forward could arrive, and the name of Lukaku is once again doing the rounds.

According to Florian Holsbeek, arrangements are ‘in progress’ between Lukaku and Milan, but there are still some things that must be unblocked for it to become a realistic possibility.

The first is the formula of the transfer, because Chelsea want a loan with obligation to buy whereas the Rossoneri management are pushing for a loan with option.

The second issue is the salary that the Belgian would then earn if his loan deal were to become a permanent, given the high amount he currently gets.

Manchester United looks forward to add new players but must first sell the old once. As such, Anthony Martial has been seriously linked with a move away from Manchester United this summer, although it has been a struggle to move the Frenchman on.

However, teams from the mega-rich Saudi Pro League have reportedly been involved in the race for the injury-prone United forward.

Martial was summoned late on and looked promising and able to link the play between the midfield and attack better than Marcus Rashford had for the 80 minutes prior.

Martial, with Rasmus Hojlund’s imminent return, may well be limited to substitute appearances throughout the season and may want to move to increase his game time.

Saudi sides linked

According to a report, numerous Saudi sides are said to be interested in the former AS Monaco man, this could be a huge boost for Manchester United’s financial situation.

The report states that Erik ten Hag is open to the idea of leting go the forward, this would certainly limit United’s striker options going forward, and this may mean another forward would be targeted.

Martial has struggled with injuries for the last few seasons and a move away may well be the best solution for both parties and would add some much-needed funds to the coffers at Old Trafford.

Another question begging for answers is will there be replacement for Martial?

Martial, despite his injury problems, is a different option up front and is an option, but were he to be sold, United would have Hojlund and Rashford as the only striker options available.

The fee that the Saudi side would be willing to sign a deal for the forward would be crucial for this deal.

Martial’s wages, expected to be around £250,000 a week according to Salary Sport, removed from the wage bill would also be a huge bonus for Ten Hag.

What striker United would target were Martial to leave remains to be seen. A striker option who could perhaps offer something different than Hojlund could be crucial.

Joao Felix, who showed glimpses of promise during his Chelsea loan, could be available on a short-term loan deal, although the Portuguese forward is close to moving to Barcelona according to Gianluca Di Marzio.
