Rio Ferdinand slams Roy Keane for refusing to back Michael Carrick as Manchester United boss
Rio Ferdinand has openly criticised former teammate Roy Keane for his lack of support toward Michael Carrick, as debate continues over who should lead Manchester United forward.
Carrick has impressed during his spell in charge, guiding United into the Premier League’s top four following a strong run of form capped by a significant victory over Tottenham. Yet despite the recent upturn in performances, questions remain over whether he should be appointed permanently.
Ferdinand, however, believes Carrick deserves serious backing — and admitted he is surprised by Keane’s continued scepticism.
Speaking about the risks attached to appointing Carrick, Ferdinand acknowledged that no managerial appointment is guaranteed to succeed.
“There’s risks with anyone that goes in there,” Ferdinand said. “No matter what Michael Carrick does, how well he does, and if he got the job on the back of a great ending to the season, there’s still risk.”
The former defender argued that uncertainty is part of football management, suggesting that singling Carrick out as a gamble is unfair given that even elite, experienced coaches carry similar doubts when stepping into a new role.
Roy Keane, meanwhile, has consistently voiced his preference for a more proven candidate. The outspoken United legend has previously suggested that the club should look at a manager with a stronger track record at the highest level, naming Thomas Tuchel as an example.
“I think you can get a better manager than Carrick, absolutely,” Keane said. “Just cause you’re doing well at United, it doesn’t mean he’ll do well at another club.”
Keane’s stance reflects concerns among some supporters who feel Manchester United, given their stature and expectations, should prioritise established pedigree over potential. With the club seeking stability after several turbulent seasons, experience is viewed by many as a safer route.
But Ferdinand appeared frustrated by what he sees as an overly negative outlook toward Carrick’s candidacy. Reacting after United’s latest triumph over Tottenham pushed them into the top four, Ferdinand said: “I don’t understand that with Roy, I’ve got to be honest. I don’t know how you can be so against it.”
For Ferdinand, Carrick’s impact — particularly in improving organisation, confidence and results — warrants encouragement rather than dismissal. He believes the former midfielder has shown composure and tactical intelligence, qualities that could translate into long-term success if given the opportunity.
The exchange highlights a growing divide among former players over the direction United should take. While Keane demands proven excellence, Ferdinand appears more willing to back continuity and reward strong internal progress.
