BREAKING: Dallas Cowboys Set to Appoint Mike Tomlin as New Head Coach

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys are finalizing a deal to make Mike Tomlin the franchise’s next head coach, multiple sources confirmed Sunday night, in a stunning move that would pair the Super Bowl-winning coach with Dak Prescott and a roster desperate for postseason relevance.

The deal could be announced as early as Monday, according to people with knowledge of the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement was not yet official. Tomlin, who resigned from the Pittsburgh Steelers in January after 19 seasons, has spent the 2026 season as an analyst on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” pregame show.

The Breaking Point

The decision comes after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ patience with Brian Schottenheimer finally snapped. Dallas fell to 1-3 with a humiliating 27-13 loss to the previously winless Houston Texans on Sunday, a game in which the Cowboys committed four turnovers and were flagged for 11 penalties.

The loss was the fourth straight for Dallas, which opened the season with Super Bowl aspirations after trading for cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and spending big in free agency to fix a defense that ranked 28th in 2025.

But the final straw was Week 3 in Rio de Janeiro, where Schottenheimer’s late-game blunders directly cost Dallas a win over the Baltimore Ravens. Leading 31-28 with 23 seconds remaining, the Cowboys reached the Baltimore 2-yard line. After an incompletion, a false start, and a Prescott scramble, Dallas settled for a tying field goal with seven seconds left. The ensuing kickoff went through the end zone, and Lamar Jackson needed just one play to set up Tyler Loop’s 56-yard game-winner .

Schottenheimer admitted he “overcoached” Prescott on the decisive third-down play, telling his quarterback to throw the ball away rather than take a shot at the end zone . Two days later, he stood before the team and said three words: “I messed up” .

It was a moment of accountability that players respected. But respect doesn’t win games in Dallas.

Why Tomlin, Why Now

Tomlin, 54, brings instant credibility that Schottenheimer never possessed. In 19 seasons with Pittsburgh, Tomlin never posted a losing record, won Super Bowl XLIII, captured seven AFC North titles, and compiled over 170 regular-season victories .

More importantly, he brings the “energy, edge and passion” that sources say has been missing from the Cowboys’ building. A Steelers player recently told an NFL insider that when Tomlin led Pittsburgh onto the field, “there was a belief that the team was going to win” — a belief that “is not there” with his replacement, Mike McCarthy .

That’s exactly what Jones is buying.

Tomlin has been subtly positioning himself for this moment. In September, he publicly criticized Schottenheimer’s late-game decision-making on NBC’s pregame show, a move that raised eyebrows across the league and fueled speculation about his coaching ambitions . When asked by Cris Collinsworth about returning to the sideline, Tomlin offered a telling response.

“It’s certainly not a 32-team league for me,” Tomlin said. “I’ve lived too much for that. But I’ve also learned to never say never.”

Dallas, with its star quarterback, elite receivers, and owner willing to spend, is one of the few destinations that fits Tomlin’s criteria.

The Jerry Jones Factor

The biggest question surrounding any Cowboys coaching hire is whether Jones will cede enough control to make it work. Tomlin, a future Hall of Famer with a strong personality, is not a coach who will accept meddling quietly.

But sources close to the situation say Jones has been unusually deferential in recent conversations, telling associates he wants to “win one more” before his tenure ends. Jones has privately acknowledged that his team needs a “grown-up” in the room, a coach with the stature to command the locker room and the credibility to stand up to ownership.

Tomlin, who has never had a losing season, fits that description better than any candidate available.

The two men have mutual respect dating back years, and Jones has long admired Tomlin’s steadiness in Pittsburgh despite often-limited quarterback play following Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement .

What It Means

For Prescott, the hire represents a potential career reset. At 33, the franchise quarterback has won just two playoff games in his career. Tomlin’s track record of maximizing quarterback talent — from Roethlisberger to Mason Rudolph to Kenny Pickett — suggests he can help Prescott finally break through.

For the Cowboys’ beleaguered defense, Tomlin brings a defensive-minded head coach who understands how to build a championship unit. He’ll likely bring in an experienced coordinator and implement a scheme built around Micah Parsons’ pass-rushing ability.

For the NFC East, it’s a warning shot. The Philadelphia Eagles have dominated the division in recent years, but a Tomlin-led Cowboys team with Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Parsons would immediately become a contender.

The deal is not yet signed. But in Dallas, the countdown to a new era has begun.
