BREAKING: Five-Star Guard Flips Commitment to Alabama
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — In a stunning late-night development that reshapes the 2027 recruiting landscape, five-star combo guard Chase Lumpkin has flipped his commitment to Alabama, sources confirmed to multiple outlets Monday evening. The announcement sent shockwaves through college basketball and delivered Nate Oats one of the most significant recruiting victories of his tenure.
Lumpkin, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound prospect from McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Georgia, had been heavily linked to several powerhouse programs but ultimately chose the Crimson Tide after an official visit to Tuscaloosa earlier this month.
The Decision
Lumpkin announced his commitment Wednesday on Instagram, choosing Alabama over a final group that included USC, Michigan, Louisville, Arkansas, and Kentucky. The timing of the decision came just days after his official visit during Alabama football’s home opener against ECU on September 5.
In a statement released through Yea Alabama, the Crimson Tide’s NIL collective, Lumpkin made his intentions clear.
“After a lot of prayer, conversations with my family, and thinking about what I want for my future, I’m blessed to announce that I’m committing to the University of Alabama,” Lumpkin said. “Alabama feels like home.”
He continued: “I believe in Coach Oats, Coach Murphy, the coaching staff, the players, and what they’re building. I’m excited about the culture, the development, the way they play, and the opportunity to compete at the highest level.”
The commitment marks a major recruiting win for Oats and his staff, who identified Lumpkin as a top priority early in the cycle. Assistant coach Preston Murphy played a pivotal role in building the relationship, with Lumpkin specifically citing the consistency of Alabama’s pursuit.
“The relationships I have with both Coach Oats and Coach Murphy, on and off the court, have been consistent,” Lumpkin said. “They not only said I was a priority, but their actions showed it. They attended as many games as possible and never took their foot off the gas.”
What Alabama Is Getting
Lumpkin represents a significant addition to Alabama’s backcourt for the 2027-28 season. Ranked as the No. 25 overall player and No. 6 combo guard in the 247Sports composite rankings, he is also the No. 3 player from the talent-rich state of Georgia. ESPN ranks him as the No. 28 recruit nationally and the No. 5 shooting guard.
The 6-foot-3 guard possesses a 6-foot-8 wingspan and has drawn praise from scouts for his versatility and scoring ability. During Nike EYBL circuit play over the summer, Lumpkin averaged 17 points per game, demonstrating his ability to score at all three levels.
Scouts describe him as a true combo guard who can attack the basket, shoot from three-point range, and create opportunities for teammates. His size allows him to play and defend multiple positions, making him an ideal fit in Oats’ fast-paced, analytical system.
“He’s a high-volume scorer with incredible versatility and even more potential that can be tapped into once some mechanical kinks are worked out,” one scout noted.
Filling a Critical Need
Lumpkin’s commitment comes at a crucial time for Alabama basketball. The Crimson Tide’s 2027 class had been left without a foundational piece after Anderson Diaz, the program’s original 2027 commit, reclassified to join the 2026-27 roster.
Diaz, a five-star point guard who had been committed to Alabama since May 2026, made the decision to move up a class and join the Crimson Tide immediately. The move provided immediate backcourt depth but left the 2027 class empty.
Lumpkin’s pledge restarts that class and gives Alabama a cornerstone to build around. He is now the first commitment in the Crimson Tide’s 2027 cycle and is expected to play a significant role upon arrival.
The Bigger Picture
For Oats, the commitment represents a continuation of Alabama’s aggressive recruiting philosophy. The Crimson Tide have landed top-10 classes in each of the past two cycles, including McDonald’s All-American Jaxon Richardson in 2026.
Alabama has reached at least the Sweet 16 in five of the last six seasons, including a Final Four appearance in 2023-24. The program’s sustained success and Oats’ NBA-style system have made Tuscaloosa an increasingly attractive destination for elite guard talent.
Lumpkin’s decision reinforces that trend. His commitment gives Alabama a potential future backcourt leader and signals that the Crimson Tide will remain a force in the SEC and nationally for years to come.
“The goal hasn’t changed. I didn’t come this far to stop now,” Lumpkin said. “New chapter. Same mindset. Roll Tide.”
