Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has confirmed Virgil van Dijk will be back in contention against Newcastle as expected, but there has been some bad news too.
Liverpool will be boosted by the return of Virgil van Dijk to the starting lineup against Newcastle United this weekend, but another player will miss the rest of the season with injury.
What happened?
Reds boss Jürgen Klopp has confirmed that if Van Dijk gets through the final session before the trip to St James’ Park, he will be available to start the match.
But defender Calvin Ramsay’s season may be over after he underwent surgery for a problem earlier this week. what was said
“Same squad as Monday,” confirmed Klopp during his press conference. “Ibou Konaté, not yet. Luis Díaz, not yet. Thiago not available and Calvin Ramsay has had surgery. Nothing happened on the injured side.”
“If we want to achieve anything this season we all have to chase each other down. We have to target those above us but it’s always been a tough place for us and hopefully we can build on the performance. from Monday. Our others win after that.. “The World Cup was different, this time it was ‘us’ and we can build on that.”
When asked if Van Dijk is ready, Klopp replied: “I think so. Yesterday he looked absolutely ready. I’m sure it will be the same today.”
But the news about Ramsay wasn’t so good. “I heard that he will miss the rest of the season,” Klopp explained. “Calvin came here with back problems that I had never heard of. It can happen in the growth process. He was in no pain, but could not exercise for a long time.
“After his new injury I asked him how many times he had been at his best (here) and he said ‘not often’. His season is over. Even if he could come back a little earlier, it doesn’t make sense, now it’s about preparing him for a new start, so not catching up all the time.
“He’s a great talent, a real talent who had the most unfortunate beginnings imaginable.”
What does that mean?
It’s a blow for Ramsay, but as Klopp said, if he can consider this season the toughest of his life, he will have a great career. Liverpool still have high hopes for him, but the priority now is to prepare for pre-season and then start again next year. For Van Dijk it is a big boost for a great week, in which he was able to start all three games in eight days.
Fábio Carvalho could also be in contention again this week, with Klopp praising his performance in training despite him not being in the squad for the win against Everton.
