Liverpool news: Alisson’s Real Madrid declaration as Darwin Nunez compared to Reds hero
Liverpool recorded back-to-back 2-0 Premier League wins to cheer them ahead of their Champions League game against Real Madrid.
Matches are fast approaching for Liverpool as they return to European action this week.
The Reds celebrated back-to-back Premier League wins with a 2-0 win at Newcastle on Saturday night and continued their triumph in the Merseyside derby. A trickier test awaits Real Madrid against Liverpool in the first of two Champions League knockout stages on Tuesday.
Jurgen Klopp and company are out for revenge after suffering a painful loss to Los Blancos in last season’s final and goalkeeper Alisson relishes the challenge. Start your week here with the latest headlines from Liverpool. Alisson talks about ‘confidence’
Alisson said Liverpool will have a lot of “confidence” in their Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Tuesday.
The Reds will receive the defending champion – who defeated them in last season’s final – in Tuesday night’s round of 16 first leg. Blancos have slipped behind Barcelona in the La Liga title race but remain a force to be reckoned with when it comes to continental competition.
Liverpool are coming into the game after back-to-back 2-0 Premier League wins and Alisson is pleased that spirits are up after what has been a busy season. Reflecting on Saturday’s win in Newcastle and looking ahead to Real Madrid’s challenge, the goalkeeper told Liverpoolfc.com: “It was a difficult match, a really good performance from us and we will keep that confidence, we will keep the good.” things with us and take him to the next game.”
Nunez compared Torres
Darwin Nunez received critical acclaim from former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez after he starred in the 2-0 win over Newcastle. The Uruguayan striker has been guilty of missing numerous chances this season, but needed just 10 minutes to get past Nick Pope at the weekend. Benitez sees similarities between the raw talent of Nunez and that of Fernando Torres, who was a Merseyside darling for his prolific performances before his controversial move to Chelsea in January 2011.
Benitez collaborated with his fellow Spaniard during his time at Anfield, comparing him to Nunez while serving as pundit for Sky Sports.
There were emotional scenes in St James’ Park on Saturday as Newcastle and Liverpool celebrated the tragic death of Christian Atsu with a minute’s applause.
Atsu, 31, died in the catastrophic earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria in early February, his body recovered 12 days after the natural disaster. The wing has spent many seasons in the books of the gagpies and his wife and three children were invited to St James’ Park to attend the tribute to the loved one.

Jürgen Klopp Provides Message Of Support For Former Red Loris Karius
An unusual situation could force Loris Karius into a starting role for Newcastle against Manchester United in the EFL Cup final.
A moment of madness from Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope against Liverpool may have brought former Reds Loris Karius back into the spotlight. Pope earned a freezing red card – despite what Eddie Howe thinks – after deliberately handling the ball well outside his own penalty area, denying Mohamed Salah a goalscoring opportunity.
Newcastle face Manchester United in the EFL Cup final next Sunday and will likely be forced to start Karius with a Pope suspension and a Martin Dúbravka Cup tie.
Asked after the match whether Newcastle should turn to Karius, Jürgen Klopp shared his confidence in the ex-Liverpool goalkeeper. “Yeah, I’ve heard of that,” Klopp said of the likely starting Karius. “I think they can absolutely rely on him, there’s no doubt about that. He’s a great goalkeeper, that’s why Newcastle signed him. But obviously bad luck for Nick Pope at the moment.”
For Karius, it’s an opportunity for a little redemption after a difficult road in recent years. The German goalkeeper was unable to hold down a regular starting place after suffering a concussion in the Champions League final for Liverpool and subsequently losing confidence. “Definitely (a good opportunity for him),” Klopp said. “That’s what he worked for all along, absolutely.”
