Chelsea rejected United’s third £55m offer for Mount on Friday
Proposed counter offer of £65 million including add-ons
A medium-sized offer could be accepted without a fourth offer currently imminent
Mount still has 12 months on his contract with Chelsea
Manchester United are still in the market to sign Mason Mount from Premier League rivals Chelsea, despite their decision not to follow up on a rejected third bid for the England international.
United tabled a bid totaling £55m including add-ons on Friday, although the Blues rejected the offer for a third time and instead offered a deal worth a total of £65m. of which 58 million guaranteed plus 7 million pounds. in add-ons. 90min understands and has reported that United are unwilling to meet that price and are exploring alternative targets.
However, 90min has also learned that there may be a middle ground between existing proposals for the two sides to strike a deal, despite the current £10m valuation difference.
Chelsea are expected to complete the transfer if United reach £60m in a new offer, including 90 minutes, which is less than their latest counter-offer and only £5m above United’s most recent offer. It is clear that if United reach that figure, the Blues are likely to complete the move. Mount has indicated that his preferred destination is United when he leaves Chelsea.
However, United have shown no willingness to raise their offer at this point, insisting that their rejected offer of £55m was their final approach as it has been made. United said they believe Chelsea are adding a “United tax” to the deal as the club has shown a habit of giving in to sellers for a number of players they have signed in the past.
Chelsea bought Raheem Sterling for around £47.5m last summer and will sell Mateo Kovacic to Manchester City for £25m plus £5m add-ons. Both players were in the last year of their respective away contracts and United believe Chelsea’s current assessment of Mount is unreasonable as his contract expires in a year.
However, Mount’s age (24) and local status, combined with the sale of Kovacic by Chelsea, Kai Havertz to Arsenal and a number of squad players to Saudi Arabian sides, facilitated their position on financial fair play. Chelsea are looking to raise money this Friday to put their books on this season.
However, they are willing sellers given Mount’s request to leave and think a deal totaling £60m would be acceptable if United return to the table. Despite the impasse in the negotiations at the moment, the feeling is that the deal will eventually happen. If that doesn’t happen, Mount could be reinstated in the Chelsea first team under new manager Mauricio Pochettino and the Blues are expected to keep trying to secure a contract extension.
United’s interest in Moises Caicedo has been revealed but 90mins are aware a deal will be difficult at best as Brighton value him in a similar range to Declan Rice – who will take West Ham for a fee in the coming weeks from £100 million or more.
Caicedo has a contract until 2028 and is younger than Rice, who is also of interest to United but is unable to complete a deal without adding players in return.
United are struggling with their current budget but are also keen to sign a new first-choice striker and may need to sign a new goalkeeper to replace David de Gea, whose contract expires on Friday.
Uncertainty over club ownership only adds to the problems of starting summer transfer plans. United have offered Juventus player Adrien Rabiot a contract, whose contract also expires on June 30. The Frenchman is currently considering an offer from the Italian side but United have shown interest for several months. The player will make a decision on his next move in the next few days.
