Liverpool’s Calvin Ramsay set to recover from long injury
Liverpool full-back Calvin Ramsay is out for the foreseeable future after undergoing surgery to treat a nasty knee injury.
The 19-year-old joined Anfield from Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen last summer for around £4m and is on a contract until June 2027.
However, Ramsay struggled with a long-term knee injury throughout the season and was reduced to just seven appearances in all competitions, including five for the club’s Under-21 team.
The Scot made his senior debut for Liverpool on November 1 in a 2-0 home win over Napoli in the Champions League group stage.
Eight days later, Ramsay started his first game for the Reds against Derby Country in the EFL Cup third round, playing the full 90 minutes at right-back before watching from the halfway line as Jurgen Klopp’s side went 3-2 on penalties. . Ramsay hasn’t appeared as a senior since, and provided an update on the injury on his Instagram account on Thursday, confirming that he has undergone surgery.
The teenager posted a photo of himself lying on a hospital bed after surgery and an accompanying message read: ‘The surgery went well, time to rest, recover and come back stronger! “
A number of Liverpool teammates, including fellow Scotsman Andrew Robertson and captain Jordan Henderson, responded to Ramsay’s message with brief messages of support.
Ramsay is now expected to play no role for Liverpool in the 2022/23 season, while he will also miss Scotland in Euro 2024 qualifying later next month.
Elsewhere on the injury front at Anfield, Luis Diaz was photographed training away from the first team as he continued his rehabilitation from a knee injury, with the winger still weeks away from his return to action.
Centre-back Ibrahima Konate and midfielder Thiago Alcantara, who were not sighted at the AXA Training Center on Thursday, are expected to be sidelined with hamstring and hip injuries respectively. However, the Reds have received a boost regarding the fitness of Juventus mercenary Arthur, who took part in squad training on Thursday and could qualify for the matchday squad on Saturday.
Liverpool will be looking to build on their 2-0 Merseyside derby win against Everton on Monday when they travel to St James’ Park for a busy Premier League match against Newcastle United.
Klopp’s side are currently ninth in the table and nine points behind fourth-placed Magpies, who have played one game more but the gap to Champions League places would narrow to six points with a win on Saturday.
