Alan Shearer in awe by what ‘brilliant’ Liverpool player did today vs Chelsea

Alan Shearer was left in awe by Caoimhin Kelleher’s double save for Liverpool in the League Cup final today against Chelsea.

The Republic of Ireland international was named in the Reds starting XI yet again with Alisson Becker out injured, with Kelleher the hero the last time Liverpool met Chelsea in a League Cup final.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper has impressed whenever given the chance to start at Wembley Stadium, and Kelleher was again impressive for the Anfield side in the English capital.

And speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s coverage of the match, Shearer was blown away by a double-save made by Kelleher to deny Cole Palmer and then Nicholas Jackson from close range.

With Kelleher strongly linked with a move away from Liverpool heading into the summer, the Cork-born talent proved yet again today why the Irish international is as highly-rated as he is despite being backup to Alisson.

Shearer said after Kelleher’s brilliant double-save: “What a save that is from Kelleher, it’s a magnificent save. The goal was there and open, gaping-open, but Kelleher is there, brilliant save.”

Kelleher’s future at Liverpool remains as uncertain as it has ever been, with the 25-year-old potentially better off leaving Anfield despite carving a niche for himself as Alisson’s perfect backup option.

However, the shot-stopper showed today why Kelleher is good enough to be a starting keeper for the majority of top European and English clubs, as well as why Liverpool wanted to keep him this season.

With Alisson out injured, the Reds have been wise in their judgment to keep hold of Kelleher despite the goalkeeper being the clear number two on Merseyside.

And the Irish goalkeeper repaid that faith in a big way today against Chelsea, with Kelleher once again putting in an incredible performance at Wembley against Chelsea.
