Rivalry between Liverpool and Everton Explained

The fact that they are so close gives reason enough for the rivalry; however, it comes deeper than that. Initially there was only one club in the city of Liverpool and that was Everton, founded in 1878. From 1884 to 1892 the Blues even played their home games at Anfield.

Following a dispute between board members and the club chairman, John Houlding, who also owned Anfield, vacated the clubhouse and bought Goodison Park. In response, Houlding founded Liverpool Football Club and the rest is history.

Unlike other local rivalries, the animosity between the fans was mainly on a sporting level, with many families split evenly between red and blue. For reasons like this, the match became known as the ‘friendly derby’, as fans often sat next to each other.

The bond between the clubs was strengthened by the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, in which 97 Liverpool fans lost their lives due to the negligence of the authorities. The ensuing smear campaign against fans has united the people of the city, which occurred during the Margaret Thatcher era when Liverpool was largely neglected, via The Guardian.

On the field, the 1980s also saw clubs win league titles and compete for other domestic titles, being the top two teams in the country. Two all-Merseyside FA Cup finals in 1986 and 1989 were both won by Liverpool. In recent years, Liverpool have dominated the rivalry with Everton, finishing below them just three times in the Premier League era.

Head-to-head record

The clubs have played 292 times, with games in Division One/Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield and several wartime competitions. The first match between the clubs took place in October 1894.

Liverpool have the historic lead with 123 wins over Everton’s 83. The other 86 games were drawn via 11 against 11.

Liverpool vs Everton Team News

One of Liverpool’s many problems this season has been injuries, which continue here. Thiago is doubtful for the game with a hip injury and is likely to be sidelined for this game alongside Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate (both hamstrings).

Long-term absences included Luis Diaz (knee), Roberto Firmino (heel) and Arthur (thigh). On a more positive note, Diogo Jota is set to return to the matchday squad via Premier Injuries for Monday’s game.
Everton are still without James Garner (back), Andros Townsend and Nathan Patterson (both knees). Michael Keane (knee) is unlikely to be fit in time for the game, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin (thigh) limped on in last Saturday’s 1-0 win against Arsenal and looks like an option at best bench, due to injuries Premier.

Game Prediction

Liverpool 2-1 Everton: Given their pathetic form in 2023, it’s hard to back Liverpool in every game, let alone a derby against a side with the telling ‘new coaching leap’. Expect a restrained and tight game with Everton getting 10 behind the ball for big games and Liverpool struggling to break them down. dead end
