Liverpool have entered takeover talks with the Qatar Investment Authority as Fenway Sports Group (FSG) looks to sell a minority stake in the club, according to recent reports.

Despite FSG wanting to retain overall control of the Reds, the Football Insider report says potential Middle Eastern investors would prefer to buy a majority stake.

It was reported in November that Liverpool had been put up for sale by their owners, but that they remained “committed to the club’s success both on and off the pitch”.

Preliminary talks have begun with the £373bn endowment fund linked to investments in both the Reds and their Premier League rivals Manchester United.

A recent report in the Mail on Sunday explained how United’s sales process was much more advanced, while their owners, the Glazers, wasted no time in marketing the club to prospective buyers. They are even said to have flown to the World Cup in Qatar to hold informal meetings with parties interested in investing in the Red Devils.

Liverpool have hit new lows this season and are currently tenth in the league and are in a huge battle to qualify for Europe.

Many have blamed a lack of investment as the reason for his demise, with the club having failed to sign a proven midfielder since signing Thiago from Bayern Munich in 2020.

Manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed last month that England midfielder Jude Bellingham is on Liverpool’s radar following his World Cup performances so he can address some of their issues.

However, it will likely cost more than £100m – an amount FSG’s current owners have never paid for a single player – so new investors could be what the Reds need if they are to challenge again.

And it stays to be seen whether they can address the weaknesses in the squad and return to their former glories.
