Only 14 Liverpool players have ‘guaranteed’ Anfield’s future ahead of the summer revamp

Liverpool about to enter a summer of change with several of Jurgen Klopp’s squad facing an uncertain future

Liverpool are set for a busy summer of transfers and the Reds need at least a midfield makeover.

Jurgen Klopp’s team failed to win an unprecedented quadruple last year, but this year Jurgen Klopp’s team fell drastically short of those standards. They suffer early exits from the Champions League and both domestic cups and are currently sixth in the Premier League table.

Seven points off the top four, Liverpool still have 12 games to salvage the season and qualify for next year’s Champions League. They will then try to regroup and ensure that this transitional period lasts only one year. With a number of players out of contract at the end of the season, there will inevitably be departures from Liverpool this summer. Given the Reds’ disappointing performance this year, some members of Klopp’s squad have also seen question marks over their future at Anfield.

Who should go and who will stay? We look…

Goalkeeper

Alisson Becker remains Liverpool’s undisputed number one goalkeeper and has been one of their best performers this season. With a contract until 2027, it would be a big surprise if the 30-year-old leaves soon. However, it’s a different story for his assistants at Anfield. Now 24, Caoimhin Kelleher no doubt thinks the time is right to move on and secure himself a first choice elsewhere after shining as the Reds’ number two. A fee of over £20m could tempt Liverpool into business.

Adrian is now 36 and out of contract this summer

defender

Liverpool have been poor defensively this season, but a clear first-choice full-back still appears to be in place. Ibrahima Konate has emerged as a key player alongside Virgil van Dijk, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is still unchallenged despite having the worst season of his career and Andy Robertson at the back. However, there is another story in store as speculation over Joel Matip’s future continues. The Cameroonian, who is out of contract in 2024, turns 32 in August and continues to struggle with injuries. After a bad season, he may be allowed to move on.

Joe Gomez has also struggled for consistency, but his future looks a bit more secure. The England international only signed a new long-term contract last summer, is still only 25 and his versatility in the back four remains highly beneficial. His status as a local and club player is also very valuable when it comes to naming Premier League and European sides. However, it cannot be denied that his form remains a concern and the Reds have been linked to a number of new centre-backs.

Playing at fullback, Calvin Ramsay was plagued by injuries during his first season at Merseyside. He is only 19 but a loan move could be plausible if it is believed he would benefit from starting football.

Kostas Tsimikas remains Robertson’s backup as he approaches the final two years of his contract. The Greek has established himself as a full assistant but it remains to be seen whether the 26-year-old will continue to settle for a substitute role. He would be a salable asset, but Liverpool are unlikely to be keen on moving him unless he asks to leave.

Elsewhere, Nat Phillips is likely to be sold if a suitable offer is made after a string of seasons as the Reds’ fifth centre-back.

Midfielder

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are both out of contract this summer and are set to leave the club, while Juventus loanee Arthur Melo is also set to return to Turin at the end of his fixed-term deal. Experienced vice-captain James Milner’s current contract also expires in the summer, but there is still a chance the 37-year-old will sign a further one-year extension. The midfield has been Klopp’s biggest problem this season, with the form of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson in particular being a major problem. However, the two are under contract until 2026 and 2025 respectively.

Given the midfield revamp this summer, could the Brazilian be a marketable asset if Liverpool are to raise money? It will be up to the 29-year-old to rediscover his top form over the next few weeks to quash any suggestions he is a player the Reds should consider moving forward.

Meanwhile, captain Henderson, who turns 33 this summer, is expected to revamp a midfield an experienced rotation option. To a lesser extent, the same can be said of Thiago Alcantara in view of the 32-year-old Spaniard’s next contract expiring in 2024.

Stefan Bajcetic has been a standout player for Liverpool since establishing himself in Klopp’s first team in 2023. While he may not be a regular next season if the Reds’ midfield revamp is a success, the 18-year-old is ready for be a key player at Anfield for years to come.

The same can be said of fellow teenager Harvey Elliott, who is the only player to feature in every Liverpool game this season. Though sometimes inconsistent, his future at the club is secure. On the other hand, his colleague Curtis Jones continues to be plagued with injuries. Yet to be more than a squad player at Anfield, question marks remain over his long-term future. The 22-year-old’s contract runs until 2027 and, like Gomez, his most valuable asset is his status as a local player and club manager. However, he needs to start realizing his early potential.

Before

Roberto Firmino has already confirmed he will leave Liverpool when his contract ends this summer, but the Reds’ other attacking options can be confident of their place at the club. Despite rumors linking him with a move if Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League, Mohamed Salah’s agent continues to suggest otherwise. Moreover, the Egyptian king of the Reds signed a new contract with the club last summer to become their highest paid club.

Forward

Roberto Firmino has already confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of his contract this summer, but the rest of the Reds’ attacking options can feel confident in their place at the club.

Despite rumors linking him to an exit if Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League, Mohamed Salah’s agent keeps suggesting otherwise. By the way, last summer the Egyptian king of the Reds signed a new contract with the club to become the highest paid player in its history. Meanwhile, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo are both new signings at Anfield and both 23-year-olds appear to have a long future at the club after encouraging performances this season. Luis Diaz can also be confident about his future despite tentative speculation linking him with a move as the Colombian is set to return from knee surgery after the international break in March.

Diogo Jota has also been linked with a summer move in recent weeks but like Salah, he signed a long-term deal last year. The Portuguese is certainly a salable asset if Liverpool need to raise funds, but such thinking is unlikely. Elsewhere, Fabio Carvalho has struggled for game time since joining us on a loan move from Fulham which is not out of reach. General

The result is a busy summer at Anfield, with at least six senior players on the verge of departure.

Given that the majority of Klopp’s squad has won every major honor over the past six years, it’s a telling sign of the times that probably only 14 players are confident in their future as we head towards the end of the season.

As a result, the Liverpool squad will look very different next year, and not just because of a planned midfield revamp. Meanwhile, some of Klopp’s rank and file have yet to stake their future in an attempt to prove that such a major operation isn’t really necessary.

Remain: Alisson, Van Dijk, Konate, Thiago, Salah, Henderson, Gakpo, Elliott, Diaz, Jota, Robertson, Nunez, Bajcetic, Alexander-Arnold. Uncertain: Gomez, Fabinho, Milner (expiring), Jones, Tsimikas, Ramsay, Carvalho, Matip.

Probable exits: Keita (expiring), Firmino (expiring), Adrian (expiring), Oxlade-Chamberlain (expiring), Arthur (expiring loan), Phillips, Kelleher.
