Arsenal player performance ratings vs. Sporting as Xhaka good and Jesus promising despite penalty setback

Aaron Ramsdale: Could he have done more to stop Goncalves’ efforts from the halfway line? Maybe, but who really expected him to assume that? A great save to keep Edwards out and keep it 1-1, redeemed himself as needed. Could have done better on a few penalties. 6.

Takehiro Tomiyasu: It took less than 10 minutes to get injured. Arsenal hope the problem isn’t too serious. n / A.

William Saliba: Arsenal really hope Saliba’s injury in the first half isn’t serious. The Frenchman has been dominant so far this season and losing him for a while would be a blow for the title hopefuls. n / A.

Gabriel: Well defended for the most part, as we are used to from the Brazilian. Showed his leadership skills as Arsenal also faced pressure from Sporting. 7.

Oleksandr Zinchekno: The Ukrainian’s death didn’t live up to his usual high standard with some cheap freebies. Stuck at the actual left-back point at times by Edwards. Good direction as always. 5.

Jorginho: Nice pass from Gabriel Martinelli in front of Granit Xhaka’s goal. A little lost on the approach to the sporting goal when the last man in midfield dived. I’ve done this several times. 6.

Granit Xhaka: It felt like the Swiss was back to his attacking best against Fulham and that only continued here. So much more influential in the attacking third than he was and was rewarded with a goal for his adventurous positioning. 7.

Fabio Vieira: He started brilliantly and seemed particularly motivated by the boos from Sporting fans. However, as the game progressed, the influence really diminished. 6.

Reiss Nelson: Some good one-on-one dribbling moments and almost a great assist for Gabriel Jesus to start. However, not a constant threat. 6.

Gabriel Jesus: A very promising return to the starting XI for the Brazilian, who played with his usual intensity and looked desperate for a goal. It could have been longer if it hadn’t been for the lack of submarines caused by injuries. 7.

Gabriel Martinelli: In wars a few times after some meaty sporting challenges. Almost a goal leading to Xhaka’s goal but really faded in the second half. Hopefully a missed penalty won’t bother him too much. 5.

Substitutes –

Ben White: I didn’t expect to play this long but it was okay given the circumstances. It’s not his best and most influential performance with some bad second-half giveaways. 6.

Rob Holding: Maybe he was upset that he didn’t start, but he did well after becoming an early substitute. Some typical neat boulders and a nice col or two as well. However, also some misfires on the ball. 6.

Leandro Trossard: Not as influential as against Fulham at the weekend when Arsenal struggled to gain control of the ball. As Arsenal gained control in stoppage time, his striking power increased and he was unlucky not to score. 7.

Thomas Partey: Really picked up the pace in midfield. His impact was huge, especially in extra time as Arsenal dominated the ball. 7.

Bukayo Saka: Some fine direct runs that helped Arsenal look more like an attacking threat in a flash, but the impact wasn’t consistent throughout his play. 6.

Martin Odegaard: He turned up the volume for the home fans after his arrival, trying to give his side the boost they needed late on to win the game. A great delivery almost helped Gabriel win the game. 6.
