Arsenal star Takehiro Tomiyasu could be out for the rest of the season with injury, according to Football.London reporter Tom Canton.

The Japan international played at right-back for the Gunners in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 second leg against Sporting CP on March 16. However, he was substituted just nine minutes into the game after falling on the pitch injured.

Arsenal drew 2-2 after extra time (3-3 on aggregate) but lost on penalties. After the match, Tomiyasu was spotted leaving the Emirates on crutches which is never a good sign. Canton said there are rumors the 24-year-old could be out for the rest of the season. He said on The Gooner Talk.

“We’ve had some frustrating injuries. Tomiyasu may be out for the rest of the season, I understand, which is very frustrating. They’re still waiting for the final assessment on this, but there are rumors that his knee assessment is not that great. Maybe scanning will reveal that it is not as bad as many fear.

Luckily for manager Mikel Arteta, Ben White is fit and available to play at right-back and centre-back like Tomiyasu. The England international has found favor with the former Bologna player under Arteta at right-back.

However, Tomiyasu provided the Gunners with key defensive depth. After all, he played 31 games for them in all competitions, including 21 in the Premier League. What Mikel Arteta said after Arsenal star Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury at Sporting

Manager Mikel Arteta was concerned about Arsenal star Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury against Sporting CP.

Speaking after the defeat to Leoes, the former Manchester City assistant manager said.

“Tomiyasu looks pretty serious from his reaction afterward and from what he said to me, but obviously it’s very early.”

The Gunners are currently chasing the Premier League title as they are five points ahead of second placed Manchester City. With just 11 games left to play this season for both sides, the north London giants could start dreaming of their first league trophy since 2004.

Arteta’s side are not active in cup competitions and only have the Premier League to focus on.
