Wolves “inform” Liverpool about Ruben Neves’ transfer location

Liverpool have reportedly taken a beating in their apparent pursuit of Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.

According to a new report from Football Insider, the chances of a deal this month are slim.

The article states that Wolves have told Liverpool they will not be leaving Neves in January. It has been claimed that Wolves want to keep Neves at the club until the end of the season. The reason, according to the report, is that Molineux’s side want to keep the midfielder to improve their relegation chances.

According to Deloitte’s Money League report, Liverpool have the second highest salary in the Premier League

The Reds are yet to release their full accounts, likely in a few weeks, but the annual Deloitte Money League Report, which details the financial performance of the 20 most revenue-generating clubs in European football, has revealed that the club’s wage bill it had increased from £314m in 2020/21 to around £368m in 2021/22. While the higher wage cost in 2020 and 2021 can be attributed to winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020, where bonuses were paid to players and staff, the increase in 2022 was driven by new contract extensions , including those from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Andrew Robertson and Virgil van Dijk, as well as significantly higher newcomer wage bills than those leaving the club.

Whilst the club narrowly missed out on both the Premier League and Champions League titles being beaten in the final by Real Madrid in the latest financial period, the Reds have won both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. Running so close to quadrupling, it is some of the bonus payments are likely to be included in the increase.

Running so close to quadrupling, it is some of the bonus payments are likely to be included in the increase. The significant increase lifts Liverpool to second place on the Premier League’s list of wage bills, with the largest being Manchester United’s £384m, a wage hike significantly led by the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus at the end of the 2021.

Manchester City are third with £354m, according to the Deloitte report, while Chelsea have £333m.

In terms of payroll efficiency, Liverpool’s 62% turnover ratio is one of the best in the league, albeit driven by the significant increase in turnover recorded in the last financial year. If the income had been the same as last year and the wage bill had remained the same, the ration would have been 75.5%. Success in reaching the final stages of the Champions League coupled with a significant increase in business activity gave Liverpool an opportunity to raise wages.
