Report: FSG's true intentions are now emerging as Liverpool's latest reports speak for themselves

Our weekly Liverpool Jury columnists have their say on Liverpool’s January transfer window

With the January transfer window closed, it’s now up to Liverpool to deliver on the pitch.

The Reds’ only signing last month was Dutch international Cody Gakpo, who has so far struggled to make his mark while leading the line alongside Jurgen Klopp.

Many fans have argued in recent weeks that the team need midfield reinforcements, but Liverpool have opted against strengthening in that area despite a number of rivals.

Four supporters have shared their thoughts on the potential impact of the latest transfer window on the Reds’ season as part of ECHO’s weekly fan column.

It was inevitably sobering to watch the clock tick by on transfer day and know that no one else would join the ranks. It was worse to wake up the next morning to find the fourth biggest rival as Chelsea had agreed a stunning deal for Enzo Fernandez, while Manchester United had smartly replaced injured Christian Eriksen with Bayern’s versatile midfielder Marcel Sabitzer .

But in the end, I remain confident. We have a team that can turn things around and we’ve been here before: just remember the gloom of the pandemic season as we put on a magnificent run to defend our Champions League spot.

With Jota and Van Dijk returning this month and the team showing little progress, let’s just hope we can start fixing things before it’s too late. Three points are no less than mandatory this weekend. FSG out? Leave me alone. FSG plus cash? Yes please. With the transfer window closing without the Reds receiving any midfield reinforcements, we as fans have to wonder if Klopp can salvage anything from this season. A sustainable ownership model based on balancing books and spending within our means is appealing, which suits our sensibilities as Liverpool fans, and that’s focused given that Chelsea are in something of a frenzy in the hundreds of millions that this transfer window is wasting frenzy.

Still, you could say it’s a fair criticism of our owners that they just didn’t support Jurgen at critical times, in line with revenue growth, and it’s now falling to sleep. We closed on the positive buy of Gakpo last month, but this waning team of heroes needed a makeover in their engine room a while ago.

It hurts to see rivals win over capable players like Enzo Fernandez and Sabitzer as our season continues to burn. Our transition seems unnecessarily self-induced. A win against Wolves might temporarily ease our frustration.

Liverpool's takeover promise was an empty promise – FSG's true intentions are now clear

David Shams (Washington D.C., @ShamsWriter) – The Reds have ignored a glaring problem for far too long and are now paying the price

There is a floating rain cloud that seems to get bigger. Liverpool fans all over the world know what I’m talking about. Like a car engine light we all ignore, it only takes so long for the lights to flash before things blow up in our faces.

January is not a time for major changes, but a lot of work can be done to marginally improve results. No one expected otherwise, but doing nothing when something was needed seems a bit much to bear.

The midfield is a mess and relying on an 18-year-old for stability in midfield when your world-class 29-year-old kingpin has taken a walk feels as close to a blinker as you can get. But when business isn’t done, ignorance is a blessing.

A quick look at our team that won the Champions League in 2019 and the problems immediately come into focus. Of the 18 most capped players that season, 12 remain. Nine of the team that started the final are still under pressure. We should know that it’s just not sustainable. The club now need to do it big this summer. Anything else can trigger a mutiny.

Of the squad that started the final, there are still nine who have to carry a heavy burden. We must know that it is not sustainable. The club now definitely needs to make a bang in the summer. Anything less could cause a mutiny.

James Noble (Worcestershire, @james_noble98) – Other party expenses only made it worse

As often seems to be the case in transfer cases, time will likely be the smartest judge of how effective January 2023 was for Liverpool.

The in-between period is usually exciting and often difficult. The time is relatively short and the prices increase regularly. That Cody Gakpo’s arrival just at the start of the window remained the Reds’ only arrival came as a surprise to many. Especially in midfield, where the drop in performance is particularly noticeable, the feeling that reinforcement is needed remains.

Sure, phrases like ‘buy when you’re strong’ or ‘fix the roof while the sun is shining’ are easy to say in hindsight, but it seems fair to say that Liverpool haven’t been doing enough lately. .

Understandably, perceptions are also partly shaped by the actions of other clubs. There has been more activity at Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea in particular. While more proactivity appears to be needed, the potential return of Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Virgil van Dijk in the coming weeks could change the picture.

Saturday’s busy journey to Wolves, who made several additions in January, will hopefully brighten that picture for us in the meantime.
