“I won’t say anything without my lawyer!” – Klopp ‘doesn’t understand how ‘Chelsea spending’ is possible
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is baffled by the possibility of Chelsea’s huge spending on players over the past two transfer windows.
According to Transfermarkt, the Blues have spent a total of €611.49million on transfers over the summer and January, while other clubs across Europe are casting envious eyes on Stamford Bridge.
Many fans wonder how Chelsea manage Financial Fair Play procedures while spending such large sums under new owner Todd Boehly.
And Liverpool boss Klopp, who spent an estimated £40million on Cody Gakpo in the transfer market in January, finds it hard to understand how Chelsea can spend so much money.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Liverpool’s game against Wolves, Klopp said: “I won’t say anything without my lawyer!” (Laughs)
“I don’t understand that part of the business, what can or can’t you do. The amounts are big, the players are all good players.
“I don’t understand how it’s possible, but it’s not my job to explain.”
As for consolation for Liverpool’s performance against Brighton last weekend despite the loss, Klopp replied: “We want to win games and it seemed possible, which is good.
“Last game at Brighton it didn’t seem possible. We shouldn’t have lost but we did. We took steps in the right direction but conceded that goal and the way we we did was not cool.”
On Mohamed Salah’s form, Klopp added: “All strikers go through these moments. The strikers benefit from schemes and we had to make changes. If you don’t score for a while you might not be 100 per cent confident, but I have no problem with him wanting it.”
As Klopp faced Wolves for the third time in a matter of weeks, he continued: “We have played together against teams in various competitions before. It happens quite often.
“We know each other better now; You have been working with the manager for a long time. All matches were very competitive.
And Klopp also gave an update on the latest injury situation, saying: “It’s better in general. Diogo Jota had a full session with the team this week but then had a rehabilitation session. He was part of the plan, he will train again next week.
“Bobby [Firmino] is getting closer and closer, very well of course. Luis [Diaz] is in the running now, but Ibou [Konate] is out. Virgil [van Dijk] will train next week, but he’s not ready. “Ibou has a muscle injury. The changes on defense aren’t great, you want to make changes with the rotation, but Joel [Matip] and Joe [Gomez] have played together before.
